VICTORY IN AUSTRIA: FILTERING PERMITTED BY LAW
MAG Austria is celebrating a new victory. The government will allow
motorcyclists to filter through traffic lanes, provided traffic is stationary
and there is plenty of safety distance left. This is an adoption of the law for
cyclists, who have been permitted to filter for many years. The law for
motorcyclists will be implemented by mid 1997.
The government therefore deleted paragraph 18 StVO (StrassenVerkehrsOrdnung)
which clearly banned filtering by motorcyclists. Up to now bikers have
frequently been fined for it.
MAG Austria board member Edwin Hofbauer says: "We have been fighting for this
over the last ten years. It is one of the most important concessions won for
our fellow motorcyclists. We congratulate the government for it's contribution
towards modern transport concepts."
Filtering is usually tolerated in all other countries, but only Belgium clearly
allows bikers to filter by law. MAG Austria thanks Mr Theo Beeldens from MAG
Flanders/Belgium for the supply of supporting evidence on that. It was very
helpful in convincing the Austrian government.
